Second fire to Hit Derelict Building at Elland Site in two days

Another suspicious fire in Elland this morning as fire crews were called to Gas Works Lane, the old gas works building was ablaze for the second morning in a row.

Yesterdays fire involved an end section of the building, but this time the whole property has been affected. A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was believed to be the same building which commanded the attention of firefighters in the early hours of Saturday.

This mornings incident needed 5 pumps and 3 Aerial appliances to tackle the fire. This was fought defensively due to the unsafe condition of the building.

Four large jets, 1 Ground monitor and 3 Aerial appliance monitors were used at the height of the blaze.

Water was pumped from the nearby Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal using two appliances set into open water.

Access to this incident was only possible from the Elland side as the bridge remains closed as repairs continue following the Boxing day floods of 2015.

The fire has been contained to the building of origin but the complete 2 storey property has been completely destroyed. Structural engineers will need to assess the building later today.

Appliances from Rastrick, Huddersfield, Illingworth, Halifax, Cleckheaton, Bradford and Fairweather Green Command Unit Lite attended the incident along with supporting officers.
